Bicycles in Buildings Policy

Over the past few years the University has encouraged staff and students to use bicycles as a means of sustainable transport. The University has made significant investment in providing bicycle racks close to buildings and secure compounds and lockers.

Updated on 18 March 2021

The University is strongly against storing bicycles inside buildings. The University takes health and safety very seriously. Bikes being taken into buildings is a health and safety issue as they can block fire corridors, be trip hazards and may contain combustible parts when located in a fire safety area e.g. stairwells, landings, corridors and near doors.

This is not to mention the potential damage to University property, through mud/oil on carpets, chipped paintwork and other accidental damage to fixtures and fittings of building. A bike is not any safer in a building and the University is not liable for theft or damage to bike whether in or out of a building.

This practise must now be stopped. We will no longer allow bicycles to be stored inside ANY building without exception. We will reserve the right to remove them and place them in or near the nearest provided facility. We will endeavour to secure them as best as possible but will not be held responsible as they should not be stored in buildings in the 1st place.

If they are locked to stairs/railings or radiators in buildings, we will cut the locks and move bicycle outside. If your bicycle has been moved outside and secured, and it is after hours, then you will need to wait until the next working day for access.
