Good Laboratory Practice Policy

How the University adopts good laboratory practice to reduce the risks to staff and students carrying out research in a laboratory.

Updated on 24 September 2024

Policy Statement

University of Dundee recognises the risks to staff and students carrying out research activities in laboratories, and to other staff and visitors when they are present in a laboratory.  The University is committed to reducing these risks to a level which is as low as is reasonably practicable. The implementation of good laboratory practice by staff and students carrying out research represents one aspect of achieving this.

Arrangements

All staff and students carrying out research activities in a laboratory (i.e. research staff and students) will adopt good laboratory practice as detailed in the Good Laboratory Practice Handbook (available on the Safety Services Sharepoint website). This represents a minimum standard of safe working practice and does not remove the requirement to undertake risk assessment as a way of identifying further controls that may be required in certain circumstances.

Research staff will decide by risk assessment which parts of good laboratory practice are implemented by visitors to the laboratory, and they will ensure visitors comply (e.g. wearing of laboratory coats and eye protection, where this has been assessed as required).

Line managers of non-research staff working in laboratory facilities (e.g. cleaners and Safety Services’ hazardous waste technicians) will decide by risk assessment and in consultation with management of research laboratories which measures are required to prevent injury and ill health to their staff.
