Nursery pre-birth to three policy
How the University Nursery uses the ‘Pre-Birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland’s children and Families’ document as a tool to plan the care and education of children aged 0-3.
Updated on 21 April 2023
We strive for the highest standards in care and education for all of our children, whilst always taking into account their individual needs and unique qualities.
Your child is at the centre of everything we do and we try our best to involve our children in their own learning, consulting them on what they would like to learn and helping them to take the next steps in their development at all stages.
In Scotland, the ‘Pre-Birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland’s children and Families’ document is used as a tool to plan the care and education of children aged 0-3. Its aim is to ensure every child will have the ‘best start in life’ and that each individual is equipped to take on the many challenges they will face as they grow up and progress. There are four main principles which we aim to incorporate into our daily routines; these are the Rights of the Child, Respect, Relationships and Responsive Care. By ensuring we are responsive to the needs of every child, respect their rights and wishes and build positive, nurturing relationships with our families, we enable each child to reach their full potential and develop in a safe and caring environment.
In order to ensure we are as effective as possible at achieving these aims, we understand the vital importance of involving you in planning your child’s care and learning and the use of Anabel Care Plans, which are reviewed regularly, help us to understand the changing needs of your child. It helps us to understand what is important to you and your family and plan experiences which will help your child become a unique individual and experience fun, active and stimulating activities which they can be truly engaged in. The use of treasure baskets and ‘heuristic play’ allows children to explore their own environments and find out new things all by themselves!
The key to success when planning your child’s progression is observing and assessing their current abilities and then planning their ‘next stop’ through meaningful and insightful observations and by organising active and stimulating play opportunities which help to challenge them in new ways. You will be kept informed of these observations on our Learning Journals in online observations system which updates you as soon as your child has achieved something new!
If you would like more information on Pre-Birth to Three and how it is used in our nursery, please feel free to ask any of our staff. You can also find more information below on the Education Scotland website, a great resource for learning more about these guidelines. There is also a parent and carer information booklet developed by Education Scotland called ‘Every Day’s a Learning Day’, one for children aged 0-3 and one for children aged 3-6. This is a wonderful resource which can help all parents to include education opportunities in their daily lives and they are so simple to do.
