Fee status assessment

The University of Dundee, like other Scottish Higher Education institutions, charges different fees depending on your Fee Status.

Updated on 22 July 2025

Our fee status assessment is based on the University’s interpretation of the The Education (Fees) (Scotland) Regulations 2022 as detailed in full on the UK council for student affairs website.

Your Fee Status is calculated by our student management system using the information that you provided in your application. The specific areas that are considered in the calculation of Fee Status include:

  • Nationality / Dual Nationality
  • Area of Permanent Residence
  • Residential Category
  • Address of current and previous educational institutions
  • Address of current and previous work experience

Other information relevant to your residential history as provided in your application may also be used, particularly if we require further information.

Relevant date

Many Fee Status categories are dependent on the “relevant date” as defined by the Education (Fees) (Scotland) Regulations 2011.

If your course starts in the period:

  • 1 August to 31 December, the relevant date is 1 August in that year;
  • 1 January to 31 March, the relevant date is 1 January in that year;
  • 1 April to 30 June, the relevant date is 1 April in that year;
  • 1 July to 31 July, the relevant date is 1 July in that year.

Types of Fee Status

Your Fee Status may be one of the following:

  • Home Scottish;
  • Rest of UK (RUK) / Channel Islands or Isle of Man / Republic of Ireland; or
  • International

What is my Fee Status?

Admissions staff review and verify the student management system calculated Fee Status in line with the information provided in your application. We email you a Fee Status Notification to advise you of your verified status. We are unable to make Fee Status assessments without a fully completed UCAS or Direct application.

If we need further information

Occasionally, insufficient information has been provided in the submitted application to make an assessment on Fee Status. In these cases, we will contact you via email and ask you complete a Fee Status questionnaire. Completed questionnaires will be assessed by the University of Dundee Fee Status Panel.

There will be a deadline in the email. Failure to complete the Fee Status questionnaire by the deadline may result in your Fee Status being assessed on the information already provided. This may then result in a higher Fee Status being applied.

Appealing a Fee Status assessment before Matriculation

If you believe that your Fee Status has been incorrectly assessed, you can Appeal up to 14 days following receipt of the Fee Status Notification. To submit an appeal, you must complete a Fee Status questionnaire using the ‘My Applications’ portal on eVision and upload any evidence which proves that your Fee Status has been incorrectly calculated.

Appeal requests are reviewed by the University of Dundee Fee Status Panel. Each case is reviewed and signed off by two panel members.

The University of Dundee Fee Status Panel meets regularly, however a decision may take up to 28 days. The decision of the panel members, including reasons for the decision, will be communicated via email.

A second appeal can be raised and will be assessed by the Admissions Manager. You can appeal up to 14 days following receipt of the Fee Status panel decision. The outcome of this appeal will be final and communicated via email within 28 days.

How Fee Status affects a University of Dundee offer

Admissions offers are made on the basis of the Fee Status you have been assigned. In accepting an offer of study from the University of Dundee via the offer accept transaction on UCAS Track or the University of Dundee ‘My Applications’ portal on eVision, you are accepting our Fee Status assessment and will be liable for the related Tuition Fees for the entirety of your studies for your degree.

Fee Status and the Tuition Fees payable in year 1 are communicated in all subsequent Admissions Communications including your Offer Email, Firm Acceptance Email and Confirmation of Admission. You will also be able to view this in the ‘My Applications’ portal on eVision.

If you are holding an offer and you provide additional information which supports a change in your Fee Status, the University of Dundee reserves the right to withdraw this offer and will reconsider your application with your new Fee Status.

Fee Status post-Matriculation

The Fee Status accepted by you at the offer stage cannot normally be changed after matriculation. This status will remain in effect for the entire duration of the programme. Any subsequent changes to your immigration status after matriculation will not affect your Fee Status.
