Module code

AR11017

The module is taught through a series of short, linked studio-based design exercises.

You will explore the fundamentals of architectural space. In doing so you will consider occupation, scale, proportion, geometry, material and enclosure.

You will experiment with form and materials.

You will also develop your ideas into 3-dimensional proposals and will learn to communicate these to a wider audience.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • explore 3d architectural space, its scale and character.
  • develop a basic understanding of the fundamental elements which define architectural spaces
  • experiment with materials within a studio environment
  • engage with unfamiliar graphic and communication techniques. This will extend your understanding of the discipline

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the scale of an architectural space in relation to that of the human body
  • know how fundamental elements of architecture might be used to define architectural spaces and forms
  • understand the enclosure as defining interior and exterior space. You will also understand the relationship between the two
  • generate and communicate simple, characterful, architectural forms and spaces
  • use a range of approaches to address defined problems

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

You will take part in a series of tutored studio-based design exercises. These are supported by lectures. The lectures will focus on design methods. They will also cover analysis of architectural precedents.
