Integrated Design 1: Context and Use module (AR12008)
You will develop architectural ideas in specific local contexts. This will allow you to integrate spatial and technical knowledge
40
AR12008
You will take part in studio-based design projects. These draws together knowledge from across the curriculum. These are supported by seminars, tutorials and lectures in design methods.
Initially, you will work in small studio groups. You will develop a contextual analysis of a given place presented through drawings models and written reports.
You will then develop an individual design proposal. These will respond to the context and the spatial and environmental constraints of a specific use.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- design a simple building, within a given context. You will do this by bringing together the things you have learned so far in the curriculum
- explore methods of contextual analysis through the study of a specific place. You will look at its history, topography, and built form
- consider how context might directly inform architectural design.
- translate building users’ spatial and environmental requirements into a brief. Once you have a brief, you can then translate this into a series of architectural spaces
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand the relationship between place, use and consequent architectural form
- generate, evidence and communicate architectural ideas, referring to precedents
- understand a user’s requirements. You will be able to develop a simple building that responds to these spatial and environmental criteria. You will be able to do this while taking into consideration relevant legislation
- use analytical skills in the evaluation and communication of aspects of place. This will allow you to make architectural designs which respond to a given context
- explore and utilise simple structural systems. You will also have a basic understanding of enclosure, material, construction and consequent spatial character. This will allow you to make appropriate spaces and forms
- work with others. You will be able to take into account your own and other people's responsibilities in carrying out and evaluating tasks
Assignments / assessment
- coursework (100%)
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
You will take part in a tutored studio-based integrated design project. This will be supported by lectures. These lectures will cover design methods and analysis of precedent.
