AR22008

In this module you will learn to design environmentally responsive architecture.

Your design project will place an emphasis on how you understand and interpret of landscape and place. You will draw together knowledge from across the curriculum. This will allow you to exercise tried and tested skills. You will also be able to develop newly-discovered methods.

The project will also include an architectural group typology study. This will be of significant buildings that are relevant to the project design brief. From this study, you will work to develop a holistic, technically, and spatially resolved proposal. Your proposal will consider structure, material, and construction. It will also consider specific use in terms of spatial and environmental constraints.

The architectural design project has two components.

In the first you will investigate an architectural type. You will do this through comparative drawn analysis. You will investigate and explore the creative thinking, ideas and forms of construction behind significant existing built architectural designs.

You will also study the architects and their theories and design methods. This will serve as a mode of research which will inform your second component: the design projects.

Your design project will be a personal pursuit. You will explore the detailed design of functional, human scaled spaces. Based on this exploration, you will develop a considered building design. This will investigate in greater detail the ways that buildings relate to, and impact upon, their environment.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop designs which unearth and articulate the tangible and perceived material qualities inherent within construction crafts
  • develop designs which integrate sophisticated observational, analytical thinking. This thinking will be complemented by your understanding of the principles of sustainable technologies. This will allow you to generate designs which enhance an individual’s experience of place and space

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show an understanding of the theories and research that go into designing environmentally responsive architecture

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%). This will involve:
    • a design folio of group publications
    • an individually produced design project
      • This will consist of 3D models, scaled drawings, and digitally enhanced photographic imagery. These will be supported by a verbal presentation

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

You will meet with your tutor once a week, every Tuesday, to discuss your coursework as it develops.

You will also attend group tutorials on a Friday with the module leader.
