This module explores the wide range of structural variations found in human populations. How the variations form and their potential effects are also discussed. You will use our clinical-grade ultrasound machines during your practical classes.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- learn about some of the variations found in the structures of the thorax, abdomen, limbs, head, and neck
- learn about the surface anatomy of structures and how this varies between individuals
- learn how some developmental processes can lead to variations in anatomy
- learn how changes in anatomical structures can affect function and surgical treatment
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- discuss a range of adult human anatomical variations
- understand the embryological basis of certain variants
- relate structural changes to clinical consequences in diagnosis and treatment
- identify major surface anatomy landmarks
- relate surface landmarks to underlying structures
Assignments / assessment
- essay (25%)
- poster (15%)
- in-person exam (60%)
Teaching methods / timetable
- online lecture material
- available before practical sessions to allow for preparation
