Mass fatality events such as tsunamis, floods, or train crashes result in many deaths. In these cases, each victim must be recovered, identified, and returned to their family. This module will examine the process of Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) around the world.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Study the Interpol standard for DVI, and understand the role of the forensic anthropologist within this process.
- You will also learn about the roles of other disciplines involved in the DVI process, e.g. forensic pathologists, forensic odontologists, radiographers and police officers.
- You will consider real-world examples of mass disasters and examine the DVI process as it was applied.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Describe the role of the different agencies in a mass disaster scenario
- Discuss the different legal and procedural guides that are in existence
- Describe the different phases of the DVI process and where this fits into the process of identification from start to finish
- Describe the health and safety aspects of DVI work
- Discuss the roles of other members of the DVI team
- Communicate the requirements of a forensic anthropologist within disaster victim identification
