This module covers the fundamental principles that form the foundation of curriculum development. This will enable you to make informed decisions to develop curricula and plan curriculum evaluation in your own context.
This module will emphasise balancing the theoretical and practical aspects of Curriculum Planning and Evaluation. This will be within the context of a healthcare professional educator.
Your current knowledge and experience of Curriculum Planning and Evaluation will be used as a foundation for learning.
You will take part in facilitative activities that encourage self-reflection. These will also support your growth and development.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- examine definitions of 'curriculum', including underpinning values and purpose
- study curriculum models and frameworks
- investigate approaches to curriculum planning
- recognise approaches to needs assessment for educational interventions
- engage with developments in curriculum design. This will cover topics like:
- integrated curriculums
- interprofessional education
- outcome-based education
- inclusive curriculums
- global challenges and sustainability in the curriculum
- the use of technology to support curriculum design
- explore curriculum evaluation, including the process, models, types, levels, and methods
- apply principles of curriculum mapping
- understand quality assurance and quality enhancement. You will also understand their relationship with curriculum planning, design, and review
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand the theoretical underpinnings of the concept ‘curriculum’
- evaluate curriculum theory, principles, and trends, and apply them in curriculum design
- appraise the role of quality assurance and quality enhancement in curriculum design
- develop an original proposal for curriculum evaluation. This will be relevant to your context. It will demonstrate critical awareness of current issues in evaluation
