Life drawing is pivotal for medical and forensic artists. It refines their observational drawing skills and enhances anatomical accuracy. It provides a direct, first-hand understanding of the human form.

Through observing and sketching live models, artists develop a nuanced grasp of anatomy, proportions, and the subtle variations crucial for realistic depictions.

The practice of life drawing helps artists in both fields to create realistic, scientifically accurate representations essential for their respective disciplines.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• learn to draw the human form in weekly life drawing classes
• learn to identify various surface anatomy features
• learn how to construct the form for both full body and portraiture poses
• draw the nude model with a focus on surface anatomy and 'écorché' (i.e. the underlying anatomy)
• apply your knowledge from anatomy modules to drawing the human form
• experiment with a variety of media and techniques

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• select and use various drawing techniques and exercises
• depict the human form with line and tone
• draw anatomically accurate figures from life
• apply anatomical knowledge to the depiction of the human body
• produce écorché’s of the musculoskeletal system
• create a portfolio of life drawings demonstrating proficiency in a range of media
• critically assess and evaluate your work and that of your peers
