Professional Practice (Year 3) module (ED32002)

This Professional Practice is designed to enable you to enhance their understanding of early education and how to support and develop learning experiences for young children. In preparation, you will have undertaken an Early Years pedagogy module and during placement, will be able to make links between theory and practice.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• be in a practical context in Nursery/Early Years to enable you to develop and practise practical skills, subject knowledge, and understanding developed during University inputs from all three years of the Programme
• continue to develop your understanding of learning and teaching in the Early Years through the ability to plan, implement, assess, and evaluate a series of lessons and learning contexts that meet learners' needs and show progression of learning
• continue to develop your understanding of the role of partnership with different sectors and agencies within education in order to ensure the smooth transition of pupils from nursery to primary school
• continue to develop your ability to be a critical, reflective practitioner who can implement current national educational frameworks and relevant underpinning theory
• develop understanding of child development, play, observation, planning and working with others

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• demonstrate that you are working towards the Standards for Provisional Registration (General Teaching Council for Scotland)
• demonstrate your role as a professional through observing the General Teaching Council for Scotland's Code of Professional Conduct (GTCS, 2008)

Assignments / assessment

You are assessed summatively by both a university tutor and the school. Students are assessed with an overall grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory against the areas of the Standards for Provisional Registration (SPR) (100%)

Teaching methods / timetable

You will learn through focused teaching, tutorials and your Professional Practice Placement.

  • take place with your professional practice tutor in small student groups
• Professional Practice Placement
  • consists of one nursery week, one pre-visit day, and a six week placement block
• Placement Briefing
  • you will be briefed about placement requirements and expectations
• Recall Day
  • you will return to university for a Recall Day during placement to have an opportunity to reflect on their practice and meet with your tutor.
