Applied Comics go beyond entertainment. They are designed to educate, inform, and impact change. They are created through collaborations with researchers, educators, charities, and organisations. Through these collaborations, applied comics address real-world issues in engaging ways.

You will dive into a variety of applied comics. These will include exclusive case studies from the University of Dundee’s unique collections and practice-based research in this area. These real-world examples will give you a deep understanding of how comics are used to communicate complex ideas. They can also make learning both accessible and fun.

You will travel through the rich history of educational comics. You will trace their roots back to the 1930s and discover how they have evolved to become a dynamic tool for communication today. Learn about the distinct techniques used in public information comics.

Discover how comics combine words and images to make complex ideas accessible. You will learn how storytelling and dual coding strategies can challenge conventional communication to enhance public understanding. Dive into the creative power of comics to drive social change and broaden your communication skills

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • analyse a range of texts. There will be a focus on form, theme, and storytelling, using subject-specific terminology
  • engage with critical debates and creative practices. You will learn to show an interdisciplinary understanding of comics in the context of creative writing and the creative economies
  • build skills in reading and interpreting both critical and creative texts. You will also learn to communicate insights
  • develop practical and creative abilities by producing an applied comic. You will do this with an emphasis on script-writing

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • perform close reading of applied comics. You will be able to evaluate communication strategies and informational value
  • engage with critical debates on the educational and informative potential of comics. You will be able to show advanced knowledge of current developments
  • learn how applied comics function by creating one, focusing on developing script-writing skills and working with artists
  • enhance your employability across research, creative, and communication sectors

This module does not have a final exam.
