You will develop an understanding of the science of the Earth’s water resources and the potential risks that they pose to society. You'll learn about key geohazards on Earth and how society addresses specific issues of hazard assessment and how to cope with risk. On completion, you will have a comprehensive knowledge of geohazards in a range of environments and at different timescales and to interpret these with the contexts of modern societies.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain knowledge of the range of adjustments to environmental hazards
  • learn some of the techniques utilised in hazard and risk assessment.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the key hydrological processes that underpin different water hazards and how risks associated with these are understood and quantified
  • synthesise source materials, and apply understanding of process to the needs of society
  • understand the circumstances by which specific water hazards can be recognised and mitigation measures put in place

Assignments / assessment

  • a written end of semester closed-book exam, in person (30%)
  • a 1500-word report based upon a practical workshop activity (35%)
  • a group vlog (35%)
