You will gain an advanced level of knowledge of a range of analytic qualitative research methods.
You will assess the appropriateness of different qualitative methods for your own research project. This will allow you to develop the skills to design and conduct qualitative research of your own.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- learn how to decide on the appropriate instruments to answer research questions in social science research
- learn how and why theory affects research design and vice-versa
- develop your skills of awareness around various issues. These will include:
- ethics
- reflexivity
- positionality
- power relations
- safety in the use of qualitative research methods
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand the connections between different philosophical approaches and different qualitative research designs
- design a rigorous research project and select appropriate instruments within the qualitative approach
- use your skills to carry out in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and other relevant qualitative methods in practice
- be aware of issues of ethics, reflexivity, positionality, power relations and safety in the use of qualitative research methods
