Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming ever more important with multiple decision-making and problem-solving contexts. This is particularly the case as the volume and range of geospatial data increases.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals also provide a main organising framework for the module. The SDGs require compiling data for a wide range of targets and indicators. They also require this for several different geographies. They provide a keys lens for viewing both the opportunities and the challenges for applied geospatial analysis using GIS.
With this in mind, this module also introduces major 'open' geospatial data initiatives and resources. Albeit unevenly, these developments are increasing the availability of geospatial data globally. When they are used together, and in combination with other data, they are potential 'game-changers' for making and charting progress against the SDGs.
What you will learn
In this module, you will :
- explore the potential for applied GIS-based geospatial analysis
- consider the impact of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Your consideration will include countries with conventionally relatively limited geospatial resources and histories
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand fundamental GIS concepts and principles
- use a range of core GIS techniques
- apply your GIS knowledge and skills independently
- search for and evaluate geospatial data from a range of sources
- interpret and communicate results from applying GIS
- consider requirements for GIS and applied geospatial projects
Assignments / assessment
- portfolio of SDG Indicator maps and associated written commentary (50%)
- research paper (50%)
- This assignment may include you recording a short associated video to accompany your written report
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
There are weekly in-person class meetings throughout the semester. These meetings combine elements of lectures introducing new material and reviewing of current material. They also include other group-based discussion and activity.
You will also work outside of classes to complete the weekly practicals, as well as readings and other set work.
Learning material includes structured practical exercises. These are provided in written form, and come with associated demo videos. Links to associated websites and other web-based content are provided.

- Introduction to the module and to QGIS
- Fundamentals of geospatial data. A more detailed analysing using QGIS.
- Preparing map layouts in QGIS. Introduction to Assignment 1.
- Creating and using OpenStreetMap data.
- Using GIS to compile SDG indicators: a practical example
- GIS and SDG indicator: class discussion. Introduction to Assignment 2
- GIS for mapping and assessing changing environments - part 1: de-glaciating high mountain environments
- Exploring GIS for mapping and assessing changing environments - part 2: changing forest cover in refugee-hosting areas of sub-Saharan Africa.
