Public Health (Palliative Care Research) MPH Dissertation module (GM53005)

A dissertation is a large piece of written work. It allows you to present your findings in response to a question or proposition. The question is usually agreed between you and your supervisor.

In this module, you will develop the skills needed to produce a dissertation. It will focus on a public health (palliative care research) topic.

The dissertation will be a significant piece of clearly written work. You'll apply what you have learned during the Public Health (Palliative Care Research) course. You will also show the different skills you have gained throughout.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• produce a written dissertation that follows an appropriate and agreed scientific structure
• get appropriate skills in writing and referencing
• learn how to use graphical, and statistical software
• learn how to study independently, taking responsibility for your own learning
• learn how to manage your time to meet agreed deadlines
• learn how to apply for ethical / NHS approval, and take relevant action (if needed)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• define a research question(s)
• design a dissertation project which uses appropriate methods and is achievable
• carry out a thorough literature review using appropriate databases
• show evidence of critical analysis and synthesis of data
• show your understanding of the limitations and implications of your study
• propose further research or implementation of your study

• written dissertation (100%)

This module does not have a final exam. 

Teaching methods / timetable

You will work closely with your supervisor throughout the dissertation work. Regular supervisor meetings will be scheduled. Feedback forms an essential part of these meetings.
