PF40001
You will develop comprehensive linguistic knowledge, cultural insight and intercultural competence. You will also develop transferable cognitive and advanced communication skills. These will be of use in your personal and professional lives.
You will work in language skills level C1 (most skills and topic areas) as described in the Common European Framework for Languages.
You will learn to communicate competently across the four language skills. These are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will do so by learning the main vocabulary and advanced grammatical structures of French.
You will develop skills in:
- creative writing
- translation into English and translation theory
- bilateral interpreting
- team negotiation and problem-solving
Examples of topic areas are:
- the arts
- contemporary social, cultural and ethical issues
- immigration
- xenophobia
- terrorism
- non-traditional families
- status of women
- current affairs and events
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- apply accurately advanced grammatical structures and a rich range of vocabulary and idioms in French. This will show extensive awareness of complex features of the French language system
- use a standard bilingual English-French dictionary skilfully. You will also learn to use a monolingual dictionary proficiently
- use new technology appropriately
- learn to listen to, read, speak and write French. You will be able to do so in a critical, coherent, creative, sensitive, and effective manner. You will do this individually and as part of a team. You will learn to do all of this in a wide range of complex and sometimes unpredictable social and work-related contexts
- learn to provide accurate and readable English translations of a range of complex texts in French. You will learn to perform effectively as an interpreter. This will allow you to help during discussions between French and English speakers
- research, analyse, and synthesise effectively Francophone material. You will be able to do this from a wide range of printed, web-based, and audio-visual resources, including film and painting.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- show accuracy and high levels of competence in virtually all the structures of French language. This will be across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
- show the ability to use metalanguage to describe aspects of French in relation to your first language
- show deep and extensive knowledge of the French-speaking cultures and societies studied
- communicate confidently and sensitively in French. You will be able to do so in a wide range of complex and unpredictable situations
- switch smoothly between French and English
