You will get an introduction to the use of Latin in recordkeeping. This will cover Latin grammar and vocabulary. It will also cover the analysis of Latin documents, their format and language.
This 20-credit module draws on two 10-credit modules:
- RM52001 Basic Latin for Archivists and Researchers
- RM50032 Understanding Latin in Documents and Archives
What will you learn
In this module you will:
- gain a basic understanding of Latin grammar
- be introduced to vocabulary commonly found in documents
- develop an understanding of the use of Latin in a range of recordkeeping contexts
- be introduced to the diplomatic of Latin documents including formats and formulary
- understand Latin abbreviations
- identify and read the most common forms of Latin documents held in archives
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- advance your beginner Latin skills with further vocabulary and grammatical constructions
- gain a broad idea of the use of Latin in different forms of documents and historical contexts
- learn about the use of Latin in archives and historical studies
- translate longer passages and short documents. You will be able to make sense of the key points and context of each
