This PhD research focuses on the development of new soft and flexible tactile pressure sensing technology, primarily intended for integration into surgical pressure mapping gloves to enhance the safety and precision of minimally invasive surgery. The gloves are equipped with soft, flexible pressure mapping sensors embedded throughout the palm and fingers to measure the pressure applied by the surgeon. These sensors provide real-time feedback, helping prevent excessive force, minimize tissue damage, and improve surgical outcomes. The technology ensures that surgeons apply optimal pressure when handling delicate tissues, addressing issues such as tissue slippage and prolonged grasping that could lead to injury.

The project will explore the use of liquid metals as pressure sensors, which can be seamlessly integrated into soft gloves for increased flexibility and accuracy. In addition to enhancing minimally invasive surgery and surgeon training, the pressure mapping technology developed in this research can be extended to other soft robotics applications, broadening its impact across various fields.

Key objectives and potential impact

New liquid metals will be explored for use as pressure sensors, offering soft and flexible tactile feedback, and expanding their impact across various fields.
