Africa Celebration Day

We celebrated our Africa Doctoral Fellows, who are working on a wide range of thought-provoking research topics

Published on 13 June 2024

At our first Africa Celebration Day, our Africa Doctoral Fellows gathered with members of the University community to showcase their exciting research projects and celebrate together.

Guests heard inspiring presentations on a wide range of thought-provoking research questions: What are the barriers preventing adults and children from accessing mental health support in Africa? Can mutant parasites help aid the development of treatments for Malaria? How to tackle inequalities in water access in rural Malawi? Are low-cost virtual reality tools the key to enhancing nursing skills?

These are the challenges our first cohort of Africa Doctoral Fellowship scholars are investigating as part of a ground-breaking new model for equitable partnership in research, education and engagement.

Through supported research and training, Doctoral Fellows are assisting vulnerable communities in improving their health and education systems, while positioning for long-term sustainable economic development.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Gillespie commented: “We as an institution are deeply committed to working with colleagues on the African continent across our triple intensity – education, research and innovation. It’s a great joy for me when I see colleagues, Fellows, students, and friends building these partnerships.”
