Amira’s PhD journey at the School of Business

Amira’s PhD journey at the University of Dundee explores leadership through the lens of spiritual intelligence

Published on 31 July 2025

My name is Amira, and I’m originally from Egypt. I recently completed my PhD at the School of Business, where I studied Management, Leadership, and Organisational Behaviour. My research focused on exploring leadership through the lens of spiritual intelligence—how it influences organisational culture, purpose, and the deeper values behind how leaders lead.

When I arrived in Dundee, I came as a researcher—curious, hopeful, and unsure of what lay ahead. But over the years, this space became more than just a university. It became a home, and I’ve grown so much, both personally and professionally.

PhD experience

My PhD has been about exploring leadership in a way that honours deeper human values and the spirit behind what leaders do. It’s been about understanding leadership beyond just strategy or management—more about how leaders bring meaning, purpose, and integrity to their organisations.

I want to work in academia, not just to teach or research, but to be the kind of mentor and support system that I was lucky enough to have. I want to be there for students who are navigating life’s complexities while trying to succeed academically. I want to help build inclusive, empowering environments where everyone feels seen and valued.

My experience at the university has been deeply supportive. The facilities, from the libraries to the research spaces, have been excellent. But what stands out most is the people—staff, supervisors, fellow students—who have made this a nurturing environment.

Why I chose Dundee

I chose the University of Dundee’s School of Business because of its strong reputation and commitment to developing leaders who are not just skilled but also thoughtful and ethical. I wanted a place where I could combine academic rigour with real-world relevance and where I could grow both intellectually and personally. Dundee has given me that balance.

I think my studies helped me learn how to hold complexity. Research is messy, leadership is messy, and life definitely is. I’ve learned how to navigate uncertainty; I didn’t just learn about research; I learned how to hold a room, how to listen, how to lead from within. I took on roles like postgraduate research representative, representing all university postgraduate researchers at the student union; then PGR representative at the school of business; then PGR representative at the doctoral academy; student ambassador; teaching assistant; associate editor at the journal of the school of business; and many other leadership roles—you name it. Every one of these experiences stretched me. They helped me develop the confidence and emotional intelligence I now bring into my vision for working in academia. I’m not the same person who walked into my first induction meeting. I’ve become more rooted in who I am and more committed to creating spaces where others can do the same.

The School of Business was incredibly understanding and flexible when life threw challenges my way. When my supervisors left, the university made sure I was matched with new ones who aligned well with my needs. They listened, encouraged me, and helped me stay on track. This kind of personalised support showed me how much the school values its students—not just as researchers but as people.

Advice for current students

Trust the process and be kind to yourself. There will be challenges, both academic and personal, but the journey is transformative if you let it be. Take every opportunity to engage beyond your research—lead, participate, connect. The community you build will sustain you. And don’t hesitate to reach out for support when you need it; the university is more than just a place of learning—it’s a family.

Absolutely I would recommend doing a PhD at the School of Business. If you want to grow as a scholar and as a human being—to explore leadership not just as a concept but as a living practice—this course will challenge you in the best ways. And at the University of Dundee, you won’t just be another student. You’ll be supported, heard, and given space to become your fullest self.
