Dundee researchers named amongst the most cited experts in the world

Two researchers from the  University of Dundee’s School of Medicine have been named among the most cited experts in the world, according to leading industry analysis.

Professor Blair H Smith and Professor  Albena Dinkova-Kostova have demonstrated significant and wide-ranging influence in their respective fields, with their work cited thousands of times by fellow researchers. Their exceptional contributions rank them as part of an elite group described as “one in a thousand” globally.

Blair, who focuses on chronic pain and its treatment - particularly through the Chronic Pain Research Group - shared his thoughts on the accolade, "It is gratifying to receive this objective recognition of the value of our research, which is mostly raising the importance of chronic pain and its treatment.

“Research is always a team game, and I’m lucky to have been surrounded by an excellent team at Dundee for many years. This is the 4th time I’ve been included in the list, and I think it demonstrates that other researchers continue to find merit in our work."

Similarly, Albena , whose research spans biochemistry, molecular biology, and oncology, emphasised the global recognition of their efforts, "It feels gratifying and hugely rewarding as it means that the work that we do as a team is not only internationally recognized but also influential to other scientists, providing them with a solid foundation for further scientific advances."

This is Professor Dinkova-Kostova’s sixth appearance on the Highly Cited Researchers list. Albena’s research interests span multiple fields, including Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Oncology, and Metabolism, underscoring the interdisciplinary impact and collaborative nature of the work of her research group.

The recognition comes from the  Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list, published by Clarivate, which identifies researchers making significant and enduring contributions to their fields. This year, 6,636 individuals were recognized for their extraordinary influence, with the UK accounting for 563 of these designations—8.2% of the global total.

The list uses rigorous selection criteria and comprehensive analysis to spotlight researchers whose work is shaping the future of science, technology, and academia. Both Dundee researchers' achievements reflect their standing as thought leaders within their disciplines.

The contributions of Blair and Albena not only highlight the global influence of Dundee’s School of Medicine but also reinforce the institution's reputation as a hub for innovative and impactful research.
