The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science (LRCFS) has been awarded £150k from the Tay5G and the Scotland 5G Centre as part of the Tay5G Promising Innovations in Scotland Fund.

As winners of the fund, LRCFS will use 5G technology to enhance and streamline the process of generating crime scenes images and converting them to VR in near real-time. This increases the potential operational uses of virtual reality for forensic experts to access remote or inaccessible crime scenes.

The project will be carried out in partnership with the Scottish Police Authority Forensic Services.

Professor Niamh Nic Daeid, Director of LRCFS, said:

“I am delighted that we have the opportunity to trial the use of 5G technologies in combination with our award winning virtual reality capability and explore with our partners, how we can use this technology to further develop the field into the future”

Dr Farhan Tanvir Santo, project lead, said “This project will potentially enable us to revolutionise the use of VR as a tool for remote crime scene investigations, while also paving the way for this technology to be applied in other fields."

The Project leads are University of Dundee's Professor Niamh Nic Daeid, Dr. Farhan Tanvir Santo and Mr Vincenzo Rinaldi. Learn more about the project on our website at: https://www.dundee.ac.uk/projects/5g-virtual-reality-crime-scene-capture
