From graduation to success

I am Thusharika Lakmini, who graduated with an MSc in Professional Accountancy in 2023.

Completing the Master’s of Professional Accountancy at the University of Dundee School of Business marked a significant turning point in my professional journey. With a strong foundation in financial principles and advanced analytical skills, the programme equipped me with the technical knowledge and practical expertise essential for today’s competitive finance sector. The curriculum, which emphasised real-world applications, international accounting standards, and ethical financial management, allowed me to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice.

During my studies, I took full advantage of the School of Business career support services, networking events, and guest lectures from industry professionals. These opportunities not only broadened my understanding of the sector but also helped me build a network that would later prove invaluable. I also undertook a practical research project that enhanced my ability to interpret financial data and present insights to senior stakeholders — a skill that would soon become critical in my career progression.

Shortly after completing the course, I worked in the accounting profession across different companies and am currently working as a Senior Finance Officer in the private healthcare industry. The role leverages the core competencies I developed during my master's degree, including budgeting, financial planning, regulatory compliance, and leadership. My ability to adapt quickly, communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, and apply my academic learning in real-world scenarios helped me stand out during the recruitment process.

This journey has been one of growth, perseverance, and achievement. The University of Dundee not only provided a top-tier education but also empowered me to transition smoothly into a leadership role in finance. Today, I am proud to contribute meaningfully to the financial team of my company, and I continue to build on the foundation laid during my time at the University of Dundee School of Business.
