Introduction: A little about me
Hello! I’m Sherin, originally from India, and I completed my MSc in International Business and Management in 2023. Currently, I’m working as a Student Recruitment Assistant at the University of Dundee, where I support global and UK recruitment efforts by assisting the team. My background is diverse, spanning student recruitment, admissions management, and even healthcare.
First impressions
Landing in the UK felt surreal. The weather was much colder than I had imagined, and the cultural differences were immediately noticeable. But one thing that stood out was the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people. Their welcoming nature made the transition much easier and gave me a sense of belonging in this unfamiliar place. The accent was something I initially struggled to understand, but over time, I grew used to it, and now I find it charming.
Overcoming challenges
The first few months were a rollercoaster. Getting a job, coping with finances, and battling homesickness were some of the toughest experiences. Making new friends and building a support system took time. However, I learned to be independent and resilient. Small victories, like successfully navigating public transport or making meaningful connections, boosted my confidence.
Moving to Scotland has been a journey of growth and adaptation. Each challenge has strengthened me, and each experience has contributed to my personal and professional development.
Choosing the University of Dundee: A world-class business education
When searching for the right university, University of Dundee, School of Business immediately stood out to me for its globally focused and practical approach to education. The MSc International Business and Management programme was particularly appealing because it provided a well-rounded curriculum that prepares students for the realities of global markets.
The programme covers key subjects of global risk, international trade, and finance, in addition to providing students the option of specialising in management. What truly impressed me was the industry-driven approach —providing an international internship experience, a Foundation Programme designed to facilitate smooth transition into university life for students, and prestigious CMI and AACSB accreditations. Studying with students from across the globe added great value to my learning experience.
Bridging the gap between education and career
My time at Dundee equipped me with a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that have been invaluable in my career. Key modules in international business, operations management, strategy, and marketing provided a strong academic foundation, while group projects and case studies helped me develop problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork abilities.
A career at the University of Dundee: Turning passion into profession
Even before graduating, I knew I wanted a role that combined my business acumen with my passion for student support and international education. My journey into student recruitment started when I worked as a Student Ambassador & International Engagement Ambassador, where I engaged with prospective students and acted as a representative of the university.
As my course neared completion, I actively applied for roles within the university and other sectors. When I came across an opportunity in the International Recruitment team, I knew it was the perfect fit. Joining the International team has allowed me to expand my skills in student engagement, relationship building, and global recruitment while continuing to support international students as they embark on their own journeys.
