In memoriam: Professor Fiona Raitt

Dundee Law School is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our much loved former colleague and friend, Professor Fiona Raitt (1956 - 2025).

Published on 12 February 2025

Fiona was co-founder of Dundee law firm Wilson & Raitt and worked as a partner there for 10 years before taking up the post of Director of the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Dundee Law School, in 1993. She was promoted to a Chair in 2005, and chose the title of Professor of Evidence and Social Justice, a title which well reflected her passion for upholding the rights of those in most need.

Fiona took early retirement in 2014, following an illustrious career in which she authored many highly influential books and articles. Her seminal report on why complainers in prosecutions for sexual offences should be given the right to independent legal representation paved the way for much needed law reform.

Generations of students will recall her great enthusiasm for teaching , recognised by her being given the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution for Teaching, the most prestigious teaching award made by the University.

She was a wonderfully supportive colleague, and will be greatly missed.
