From numbers in India to launchpads in the UK: my Dundee accounting story
From part-qualified accountant in India to finance professional in the UK, Anju’s journey shows where ambition and an MSc from Dundee can lead
Published on 29 May 2025

I’m Anju Mathew, originally from India, currently based in Forres and I completed my MSc in Professional Accountancy at the University of Dundee School of Business in January 2023. Today, I work as an Assistant Management Accountant at Orbex, a space tech company creating sustainable micro-launch vehicles—yes, rockets! I never imagined my career in finance would land me in the space industry, but here I am.
The Leap to Dundee
I came to Dundee with a clear goal—to upskill. I was already a part-qualified Chartered Accountant in India, and I didn’t want a course that just repeated what I knew. I needed something that added depth, built confidence in UK-specific accounting practices, and opened new doors.
Dundee’s MSc in Professional Accountancy did exactly that. The course didn’t just teach theory—it helped me connect the dots between academic knowledge and professional expectations. One highlight was the Sage accounting software certification, which was part of the programme. That hands-on experience made it much easier for me to later pick up tools like Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent during my first job in Dundee.
An added bonus? By completing the MSc, I gained exemptions from nine ACCA papers—a huge step forward in my professional journey.

Breaking into the UK Job Market
While finishing my degree, I started applying for jobs. I was fortunate to land my first role before my results were out—working in practice as a Finance Technician, then as an Accounts Assistant in the Highlands. I worked on everything from bookkeeping and VAT submissions to preparing year-end accounts and tax return filings. These roles gave me a solid foundation in the UK accounting environment.
Eventually, I moved into industry—something I’d always hoped to do.
My Current Role
At Orbex, I’m involved in preparing monthly management accounts, budgeting, forecasting, project reports, and other financial reporting. I also liaise across departments to ensure the finance function runs smoothly. Every day is different, and I genuinely enjoy the energy of the team and the challenges of a growing company.

Why It Was Worth It
A standout part of the course was access to guest speakers—including professionals from ACCA—who shared their industry insights. They helped shape my understanding of what employers value and how to stand out.
If you’re considering this course, my advice is: know your strengths, keep learning, grow your network, and start early. Dundee gave me a solid launchpad—and I’d 100% recommend it to others looking for the same.
