As an international student who recently completed my MSc in International Marketing and Branding at the University of Dundee in Scotland, I can confidently say it was a life-altering adventure. Stepping off the plane from halfway across the world, I had no idea what to expect, but Dundee and this programme wove together an incredible tapestry of academic growth, cultural discovery, and personal victories that I’ll cherish forever.
Dundee greeted me with a charm that felt both cozy and electric. Tucked along the River Tay, this compact city had a heartbeat all its own. Walking to campus through its winding, quaint streets was a refreshing change from the chaotic urban sprawls I’d grown up in. The University itself was a vibrant crossroads of cultures, where students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and beyond mingled effortlessly, and I found myself building friendships that bridged continents. That sense of belonging, despite being so far from home, was a gift I hadn’t anticipated.

The MSc programme was nothing short of phenomenal, driven by an exceptional team at the School of Business. Dr. Ying Wu, a master of brand management and digital marketing, turned complex branding concepts into practical lessons while showing us how to leverage the digital world. Her insights were a game-changer, and her ability to be a friend and a mentor was the biggest help. Professor Andrew Kinnear brought his industry experience to marketing strategy, challenging us with real-world scenarios; his lessons on navigating global markets still echo in my mind. Dr. Keith Dinnie, an expert in place branding for cities and countries, opened my eyes to how nations and regions craft their identities. His examples were as fascinating as they were inspiring. Dr. Dila Kulturel, a brand management specialist, deepened my appreciation for how brands are built and sustained, with classes that felt like a masterclass in creativity and strategy. And Dr. Andrzej Kwiatkowski, with his marketing research knowledge, revolutionised my approach to data. His guidance on crafting surveys and decoding trends gave me tools I’ll use for years. Their collective brilliance pushed me to excel, culminating in earning my degree with Distinction—a proud milestone.

Living in Scotland was an adventure in itself. The weather was a rollercoaster—rain one minute, golden sunlight the next—but the landscapes made it all worthwhile. Standing atop Dundee Law, with the city sprawling below, or escaping to the rugged Highlands on weekends, I fell in love with this corner of the world. Student life was practical and affordable; my accommodation was a comfy haven, and a University scholarship took the edge off my finances. I even embraced the local cuisine, mastering a haggis supper that impressed my flatmates!

Socially, Dundee was a treasure trove. Ceilidh dances, with their whirlwind of music and laughter, became a rite of passage, while late-night study sessions in the library fostered a camaraderie that felt like family. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss home, there were quiet nights when the distance stung, but Dundee’s warmth and the connections I made filled that gap with something just as meaningful.

Now, with my MSc in hand and the Distinction badge to my name, I feel equipped to take on the marketing world, armed with skills, perspectives, and memories that only this journey could provide. To any international student weighing this path: take the plunge, it’s a decision that’ll shape you in ways you can’t yet imagine. I’m living proof!
