Now thriving in Scotland’s accounting sector, she reflects on the skills, support, and determination that helped her secure key roles and plan for a future in financial leadership.
My name is Nilmini Nisansala Loggama Vidanelage. I’m originally from Sri Lanka, and I completed my MSc in Professional Accountancy (with distinction) at the University of Dundee School of Business in 2023. I’m currently working in Scotland as the Senior Accounts Assistant at McDermott Group and a part-time accountant at Better Nutritional Science.
I wanted a degree that was professionally aligned, internationally recognised, and based in a supportive environment. The MSc in Professional Accountancy at the School of Business ticked all those boxes—and more. It also worked well alongside my ACCA studies.
The course helped me understand UK accounting standards, corporate governance, and financial reporting, which are essential for my current roles. Assignments and case studies trained me to think critically and work to deadlines—skills I now use daily.
The School of Business was welcoming and supportive from the start. Lecturers focused on real-world applications, which strengthened my technical skills. As an international student, the transition to studying in the UK was made easier through academic support, career guidance, and a strong sense of community. The encouragement and resources I received played a key role in my success and helped me confidently step into the UK job market.
It wasn’t easy, especially as an international graduate, but I stayed focused. I applied widely, improved my interview skills, and eventually secured two part-time accounting roles. The confidence I gained from my degree helped a lot during interviews.
I developed skills in financial reporting, budgeting, and analytical thinking. Soft skills like time management and teamwork were also key, especially when juggling deadlines or working across teams.
In my current role, I prepare monthly accounts, reconcile bank statements, post accruals and prepayments, and handle day-to-day queries. I use Xero, Sage, and Excel a lot. Every day is different, but that’s what I enjoy most.
I enjoy solving problems and seeing the impact of my work. Whether it’s catching an error or streamlining a process, it’s satisfying to know I’m adding value.
Advice for Current Students - Go for it! Be prepared to work hard, but know that the support is there. Don’t wait until graduation to think about your career—start early, network, and get involved in university activities.
The degree gave me the knowledge and confidence to work in the UK accounting sector and aim for permanent roles. I hope to grow into a Financial Controller or Advisor role in the future, possibly starting my own practice.
Would I recommend doing a masters in Professional Accountancy? Yes, 100%. The course is practical, well taught, and respected by employers. Dundee was a great place to study, and I have no doubt it played a big role in getting me where I am today.
