Successful Breaking Barriers Scheme Projects Announced

This programme supports grassroots projects that address the specific challenges faced by various research staff, from technicians to postdoctoral researchers, and those supporting the broader research ecosystem in Dundee

Published on 16 January 2025

We share details of funded projects from the first round, addressing different barriers identified with our research culture.

We are Technicians

The ‘We are Technicians’ project shines a light on the university’s talented and often behind-the-scenes technical staff. The project aims to share positive examples of the skills and contributions of University of Dundee technicians.

A series of case studies will be developed to showcase what the technician does, how they came to be in that position, and the value their role adds to the University.

Supporting Long-Term Postdoctoral Researchers

A second award focuses on promoting the valuable contributions made by long-term postdoctoral researchers. Led by Claudia Hemsley, Hedda Meijer, Fiona McLean and Danielle Smyth, this collaboration aims to raise awareness of postdocs' critical work in supporting university research. Postdoctoral researchers manage projects, mentor early-career researchers, and advance complex studies that support research initiatives.

This project will work to create a stronger network for postdoctoral researchers and to build university recognition of their contributions to ensure that this group feels more connected and valued within the Dundee research community.

An Efficient, Inclusive, and Sustainable Digitisation Service

The Digitisation Service Project, led by Bridget McCall from Library, Academic and Cultural Services, is designed to create a streamlined, inclusive and sustainable digitisation service at the University.

This service aims to create a digital-forward culture, provide accessible resources throughout the University, and make research accessible to a wider audience, promoting a more inclusive and tech-savvy research culture. By promoting digital inclusivity, the project sets a precedent for how University resources can be shared widely, sustainably, and efficiently.

These projects support IFRC's mission to promote research culture and recognise contributions at the University.

Through initiatives like these, the IFRC continues to break down barriers and pave the way for a more cohesive and supportive research environment. We will soon launch a second round for applications, so please look out for this.
