University of Dundee Engineering students innovate with Newbury Electronics partnership

Mechanical Engineering students the chance to translate classroom learning into hands-on industry experience by designing and producing their own printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Published on 29 November 2024

The School of Science and Engineering at the University of Dundee is delighted to announce an exciting collaboration with Newbury Electronics, a leading UK manufacturer of printed circuit boards (PCBs).

This partnership has provided our undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students with the invaluable opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world industry practice.

Thanks to Newbury Electronics’ expertise and resources, our students have been able to design and develop their own PCB for production and testing over the past four weeks. As part of this hands-on initiative, they have created and tested prototypes, gaining crucial insights into the practical applications of their academic studies by building fully functional prototypes such as ball launcher, desktop cleaning robot, coin sorter, obstacle avoidance autonomous vehicles.

At the University of Dundee, we are firmly committed to integrating industry experience into the classroom at every level of our engineering programmes. Collaborations like this enable students to enhance their technical knowledge, develop problem-solving skills, and understand the expectations of industry professionals. By engaging directly with real-world engineering challenges, students are better prepared for their future careers, equipped with both the theoretical foundation and the practical and communication skills employers seek.
