University of Dundee: International Student Symposium – Prepare to apply

On 26 March 2025, 96 international students from the University of Dundee took part in our first-ever International Student Symposium

Published on 25 April 2025

With the theme “Prepare to Apply”, the event was designed to equip students with the tools, insights and confidence needed to navigate the UK job market. Through a fully immersive and practical day of activities, students developed key employability skills, gained first-hand experience of UK recruitment practices, and built valuable connections with graduate employers and industry professionals.

The event provided an authentic space for students to test and develop their application skills in real time—interviewing, receiving feedback, critiquing CVs, and learning how to make a strong first impression. It also gave students the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive environment and to gain fresh perspectives on their future career paths. Many left the day feeling more confident, informed, and better prepared to take their next steps.

Thirty professionals from a wide range of industries generously gave up their time to work alongside Careers Service staff and students in a collaborative, hands-on environment.

The day began with a warm welcome from our Vice-Principal, Professor Kim Dale, who shared an important message for our international students:

“You bring diversity, fresh perspectives, and global insights that enrich our university community. Your skills, ambition, and contributions are vital to both the University of Dundee and to broader society. We are committed to ensuring that you have the guidance and resources you need to thrive both during your studies and beyond.”

Students then had the chance to observe a live graduate interview between a recent international alumnus and a graduate recruiter. The session included a Q&A, where attendees asked follow-up questions and voiced their own interview concerns. Careers Adviser Craig Reoch followed with a focused session offering practical interview tips and advice.

After a welcome break for coffee and cake, students moved into a dynamic rotation of three 40-minute immersive activities:

1. Speed Interviewing

Thirty enthusiastic recruiters brought their expertise to our speed interviewing station. Each student tackled three graduate interview questions with immediate, personalised feedback, then rotated to another recruiter to do it again - meeting four interviewers in total and gaining feedback on 12 different commonly asked interview questions.

2. Learn How to Shortlist a CV – What Makes Your CV Stand Out

Lynsey and Charlotte from Hutcheon Mearns, along with Careers Adviser Sophie, helped students step into the shoes of a graduate recruiter. Students reviewed a selection of CVs and had to decide which one they’d shortlist—no easy task!

Lynsey then led an engaging discussion on what recruiters look for and how students can make their CVs stand out from the crowd. This session was a definite highlight—the energy in the room afterwards said it all.

3. LinkedIn Headshots & Careers Service Added Value

All students were offered a professional LinkedIn headshot by our University photographers. While waiting, they chatted with members of the Careers Service team about the support available - from refining applications to joining the Dundee Plus Award and finding jobs through the JobShop.

Visa panel insights

To round off the day, students returned to the lecture theatre for a session with our International Student Support Team and Scotland’s Migration Service. They delivered an insightful seminar covering visas, working in the UK, and wraparound support—followed by a lively Q&A session.

This was more than just a careers event—it was a confidence-building experience that helped international students see their own potential more clearly. Many commented on how much they learned about themselves, what employers are looking for, and how to present their skills in a UK context.

The day also encouraged meaningful networking: students connected directly with employers, asked thoughtful questions, and heard real-world advice that will support their transition from university to the workplace.

Heidi and Kate (current university students) share their experience at the event on YouTube:

We’re already looking ahead to recreating the event in early 2026 for our fantastic international students and supportive employer partners.

A huge thank you to all the recruiters and professionals who took the time to support our students—your time, experience, and insight are appreciated.
