Published on 3 March 2025

In response to the pressing shortage of planners in Scotland, the University of Dundee is pleased to announce its commitment to fostering a new generation of skilled professionals through the Future Planners Programme.

Graduates aspiring to pursue careers in planning will have access to a new, work and study opportunity through a collaboration between the Scottish Government and the University of Dundee. This partnership will allow graduates to apply for a position with the Scottish Government while also securing a part-time funded placement on the MSc Spatial Planning and Sustainable Urban Design programme, at the University of Dundee.

The MSc, taught at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) as part of the University of Dundee, is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of planning principles, sustainability practices, and urban design strategies. This joint initiative not only emphasises commitment to academic excellence but also integrates practical experience, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the industry.

Kirsty Macari, Associate Dean Education and Student Experience at DJCAD, states “We are delighted to support the Scottish Government Funded Placements and believe this is coming at a crucial time where the need for a growing workforce is evident.

The University of Dundee MSc Spatial Planning with Sustainable Urban Design can support individuals in building their academic skills across planning, sustainability, and urban design and complement the practical experience gained in the workplace. We have worked closely with other practice-based planners over the years at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and see the benefits that come with the collaborative approach.”

The collaboration between academia and industry is essential in addressing the skills gap in planning. By partnering with public and private planning practice, the University of Dundee aims to provide students with hands-on experience that enhances their learning and prepares them for real-world challenges. This approach not only benefits students but also contributes to the development of sustainable communities across Scotland.

As urban areas continue to grow and evolve, the demand for skilled planners who can navigate complex challenges is more critical than ever. The programme is committed to producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also equipped with the practical skills needed to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

The job roles are now live on the Scottish Government’s website and applicants can apply directly there before the deadline, 19 March

As well as applying for the job role you will also need to apply to study our MSc Spatial Planning with Sustainable Urban Design (Part Time).
