Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate course?

In Nigeria, I worked as a financial risk analyst, but I reached a point where I felt the need to take a bold step to advance my career. I decided to pursue a postgraduate degree to gain the knowledge, exposure, skills, and connections necessary for significant professional growth.

Why did you choose to study Business Analytics at the University of Dundee?

I decided to study Business Analytics and Management because of its broad scope and  critical relevance in today’s data-driven world. Modern businesses depend on data to make informed decisions, and this course equips me with the essential knowledge and insights needed to excel in such an environment.

When deciding to pursue a masters degree, I conducted extensive research to identify the country and institution that best aligned with my goals. University of Dundee stood out as the perfect match, offering an ideal balance between a comprehensive curriculum and affordability. Most importantly, the university’s unique combination of business analytics with management further solidified my decision, as it aligned perfectly with my career aspirations.

Can you tell us a little about the course?

It is a multidisciplinary programme aimed at bridging the gap between data analysis and effective management practices. It integrates technical, analytical, and managerial skills to equip students for decision-making roles in today’s data-driven business environment.

Core modules include:

  • Database Management
  • Data Visualisation
  • Operations Management
  • Strategic Management

What is the course teaching you that your first degree did not?

I completed my first degree in Economics and Statistics in Nigeria, which provided a strong theoretical foundation. However, my postgraduate programme offers a more practical, hands-on approach to learning. It is equipping me with advanced technical and data-driven skills. The programme emphasises solving real-world business problems, making informed decisions using data, and mastering key management strategies - all of which are essential for advancing in today’s dynamic business environment.

What employability skills have you developed through the course?

I have significantly developed my interpersonal relationship skills, particularly through collaborative group projects. These experiences allowed me to engage with diverse perspectives, enhance my ability to work effectively within teams, and strengthen my communication skills.

Additionally, the programme has greatly improved my analytical and critical thinking abilities. The coursework, lectures, and assignments have challenged me to approach problems from multiple angles, evaluate information critically, and think more strategically.

This combination of practical experience and academic learning has undoubtedly contributed to my growth as a well-rounded individual, equipped with enhanced communication, problem-solving, and analytical capabilities.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I hope to work for an investment bank in the UK to gain valuable experience in financial analysis and strategy, which will help me to achieve my long-term goal of starting a business consulting firm.

My interest in the fintech sector aligns with my career ambitions, as I see great potential in leveraging technology to drive innovation in financial services. This course provides a strong foundation for both my immediate career goals and my future business aspirations.

What tips would you give to others choosing to study a Masters degree?

  • Clarify your career goals - Ensure the programme aligns with your long-term professional aspirations.
  • Research the programme thoroughly - Look beyond rankings and consider the curriculum, faculty, and practical opportunities that best fit your needs.
  • Be prepared for challenges - A masters is more intensive than undergraduate study, so be ready for hard work, critical thinking, and independent learning.
