An English degree is more than just studying literature—it’s about mastering the art of communication, critical thinking, and creativity. It equips students with transferable skills that are valuable in almost any industry. Whether you’re passionate about storytelling, analysis, or the power of language, there’s a place for you in the academic and professional world.
It is often assumed that an English degree only leads to becoming an author or teacher. Although these are excellent career options, it is a misconception that these are the only options. Graduates often go on to work in publishing, journalism, marketing, public relations, law, content creation, and even business and technology.
When I began my degree, I chose to study English because I am passionate about it. I wasn’t sure what to do with my degree once I finished my studies. Now, as I approach my final year of study, I am very excited about the future. I have discovered many unique paths I can pursue throughout my time at the University of Dundee.
Every student’s journey with an English degree is unique, leading them to a variety of exciting opportunities. So, let’s hear from some current English students and discover where their studies are taking them—whether it’s into the world of storytelling, media, teaching, or something entirely unexpected!
Jake, second-year student
“I am studying English and Film, which have always been my passions. I aspire to continue my education in these fields, as I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far. My ultimate goal is to work towards a PhD one day. I volunteer at the Oxfam Books and Music shop in the city centre. I’ve encountered numerous fascinating and funny people during my time there. It has provided me with valuable insights into both retail and literature. I’ve discovered many unique and intriguing novels there, which has motivated me to consider a career focused on handling books. One of my dreams is to work at the National Library of Scotland.”
Lauren, second-year student
“An English degree has many different applications in terms of employment. I have always liked the idea of becoming a teacher. However, I am unsure if this is the direction I would like to go in after graduation. That is one reason why I chose the English pathway.”
Jess, third-year student
"English has always been a passion of mine, particularly poetry. I love how entire new worlds can be created just through words. I am also very passionate about people and volunteer in various sectors during my spare time. I am unsure of what I would like to do when I graduate, but I am excited. I know that there are so many possibilities awaiting me.”
As for me? I have spent the last few years debating my options. Studying English at the University of Dundee has opened my eyes to the possibility of careers I hadn’t even previously considered. At the moment, I feel particularly drawn to a career within Human Resources once I have graduated.
