Career paths with a law degree

Lorella and fellow students share the exciting career paths their law degrees will open up for them

A law degree opens the door to a world of possibilities. Whether you’re fascinated by family law, taxation, medical law, or a different field, there are endless career paths to choose from.

The University of Dundee is here to guide students every step of the way, offering experiences such as mooting competitions and the Law Clinic to help you dive straight into the legal world. But law isn’t only about practising in a courtroom, you could also work in legal academia, the Civil Service, or even in the Competition and Markets Authority.

I have always found the law fascinating. From a young age, I’ve felt a strong sense of justice, and I’ve been intrigued by how the law shapes our society. After completing my business management degree, I’m now eager to explore areas like regulation of data and artificial intelligence, and intellectual property law. With technology advancing so quickly, the University offers the perfect resources and expertise to help me stay ahead of the curve and be ready for whatever comes next in the tech-driven world.

Everyone is different. Let’s hear from current students about where their law degree could take them.

Victoria, Scots LLB student:

"I started with forensic psychology to understand the impact of crime and how it affects people and communities. Volunteering with the Witness Service gave me a first-hand look at the courage of people sharing their stories in court. I knew I wanted to help in the legal field, so I switched to law. My goal is to become a practising legal professional and use my skills for advocacy and justice."

Andrew, Scots LLB student:

"With my business background, I’m excited to dive into intellectual property and advocacy. IP law fascinates me, especially as innovation becomes such a huge part of the commercial world. I also enjoy arguing cases and leading discussions, which makes advocacy a perfect fit for me. My dream is to combine analytical thinking with persuasive advocacy, carving a career that blends business and law."

Brooke, Scots LLB student:

"I started my law journey with the ambition of becoming a Procurator Fiscal. My criminology degree sparked an interest in criminal law, and now I’m studying Scots criminal law and evidence. Next year, I’m looking forward to taking criminal procedure to get more hands-on experience in the field and move closer to my career goal."

At the University of Dundee, your law degree is more than just a career in the legal field. Whether it’s mooting, the Law Clinic, or countless other opportunities, these resources will help you explore your interests and help you prepare for life after graduation!
