Discover Scotland: exploring beyond Dundee
Dundee's central location makes it easy to explore the rest of Scotland
Published on 29 April 2025 by Heidi Le

Living in Dundee is like having the best of both worlds—a vibrant, friendly city that offers the perfect balance between urban excitement and the peaceful charm of the countryside. What’s even better is that Dundee’s central location and excellent transport connections make it so easy to explore the rest of Scotland, whether you're craving a weekend escape or just a day trip!
Day trips from Dundee to Scotland’s major cities
One of the most exciting things about living in Dundee is how effortlessly you can visit bigger cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow. Just over an hour away by bus, Edinburgh is a dream come true for anyone who loves history and culture. You can wander down the Royal Mile, stand in awe at the iconic Edinburgh Castle, or explore the National Museum of Scotland. And if you’re a coffee lover like me, don’t miss the best hot chocolate at the famous The Milkman coffee shop – it’s the perfect way to warm up after a day of exploring!
Then there’s Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, about an hour and a half train ride from Dundee. If you're into arts, music, or live events, Glasgow is a great place to visit. I was lucky enough to attend Olivia Rodrigo’s concert at the OVO Hydro and catch the incredible Banksy exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in 2023. It was an unforgettable experience, one of those “I can’t believe I’m here” moments.
Exploring local towns and villages
For those times when you want to slow down and enjoy a more authentic Scottish experience, Dundee is close to some of the most charming towns and villages you’ll ever see. St Andrews, just a 30-minute bus ride away, is famous for its gorgeous beaches, historic ruins, and being the birthplace of golf. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful day by the sea, with plenty of local cafés and cute shops to browse.
If coastal charm is what you’re after, I highly recommend a trip to Anstruther, Pittenweem, or Crail. Anstruther is famous for having the best traditional fish and chips in the UK – seriously, I’ve had my best-ever fish and chips there, fresh from the sea and affordable too!
Pittenweem is a hidden gem for seafood lovers, with prawn dishes you won’t find anywhere else. And when I need a break from studying, Crail is my go-to for its art festival in July, the famous pottery village, and amazing coffee shops with views over the stunning East Neuk coast. It’s the perfect escape when I need to unwind.
Free bus pass
If you're under 22, you can enjoy the free bus pass, which means travelling to all these amazing places won’t cost you a penny! Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway to the Highlands or a quick day trip to a nearby village, the freedom to travel easily is one of the biggest perks of being a student in Dundee.
Why Dundee is the perfect base
Dundee really does offer the best of both worlds – the cosy, welcoming atmosphere of a smaller city, with easy access to the rest of Scotland. Whether you’re drawn to the buzz of city life or the tranquillity of a seaside village, living in Dundee makes it easy to experience all the beauty and adventure that Scotland has to offer. From natural landscapes to cultural festivals, there’s always something new and exciting to discover in Dundee and just beyond Dundee’s doorstep.
