Exploring psychology degree career paths

Dundee psychology students share their aspirations and the exciting career paths their degrees will open up for them.

Psychology is a broad, fascinating field in which a degree can take you in so many directions. It isn’t just about therapy or research – it weaves into almost every industry, from business and marketing to technology and social policy. No matter what your interests are, there is a place for you in the academic and working world. When I first started my degree, I knew I was fascinated with the world of psychology and the study of human interactions, but I had no idea just how many doors a degree in psychology at the University of Dundee could open!

I have always been fascinated by human behaviour and the workings of the mind. Studying psychology at A-level only confirmed my passion for the subject and solidified my decision to pursue a degree in this field. I particularly enjoyed my biological psychology modules and am considering a master’s in neuroscience. However, I am also drawn to the master’s in psychological therapies at the University of Dundee. Right now, I’m exploring these options and figuring out the best path for me!

Every student’s path is different, so let’s hear from some current psychology students and see where they’re headed!

Emily, final year student

“I initially pursued psychology with the goal of completing a clinical psychology PhD and entering the world of clinical psychology after my undergraduate degree. However, my volunteer experience at local primary schools and nurseries sparked my interest in educational psychology. Witnessing firsthand the importance of a stable and healthy childhood and the impact this has on child development has made me realise my passion for making a difference in this field. I am gaining more volunteering experience before applying to PhD programmes to earn an accredited doctorate.”

Olivia, final year student

“After finishing my undergraduate degree in psychology and geography, I plan to spend at least a year working and gaining volunteer experience in psychology-related jobs, ideally working with both adults and elderly age groups. Then, I’d like to return to university for a master’s to specialise in the area I find most interesting. Right now, I’m considering a master’s in Clinical Psychology, Psychological Therapy or a Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) course but I’m hoping some work experience will help me decide!

Abbie, final year student
“After completing my undergraduate degree in geography and psychology, I plan to take a year out to explore my options and decide on my future career path. I’m currently considering two very different fields – ethical hacking and secondary geography teaching- both of which would require me to pursue a master’s degree. During my time out of academia I hope to gain insight into what these careers entail!”

Whether you dream of becoming a therapist, diving into research or applying psychology to your future business, a degree in psychology at the University of Dundee gives you a strong foundation to build on.
