The University’s Careers Service is an invaluable resource that works alongside your academic course to help you achieve your career goals, whether it is landing an internship, securing a graduate job, or refining your professional skills.
Personalised guidance for career growth
One of the highlights for me has been the personalised guidance they provide, particularly when it comes to internships. I successfully landed a fully funded internship abroad, thanks to their expert advice and practical support. They not only helped me structure my applications but also guided me through every stage of the process.
Enhancing your interview skills with mock interviews
One of the key services I took advantage of was the mock interview sessions. These sessions allowed me to simulate real interview conditions, where I provided the job description and any specific instructions from the company, and they conducted the mock interview accordingly. Afterwards, I received detailed feedback, including what I could improve, which significantly boosted my confidence for the actual interview.
Structuring a CV that stands out
They were instrumental in helping me tailor my CV and cover letters for different job applications. I was initially unsure how to structure my CV, but with their guidance, I learned how to present my experience in a way that caught the attention of employers. The level of personalisation and practical advice made an enormous difference to the quality of my applications.
Career events and fairs
Beyond individual consultations, they offer a range of events throughout the year. The Careers Fair is one such event, where students have the chance to meet with companies and universities offering internship and graduate scheme opportunities. It’s a fantastic way to explore potential career paths and make connections. Additionally, the Part-Time Jobs Fair provides opportunities for students looking for part-time positions, which is particularly useful if you are looking to work while studying.
They also host workshops and guest speaker sessions, often featuring successful alumni. These events offer a great opportunity for students to gain insights into various industries, learn from real-world experiences, and build a network that could prove invaluable after graduation.
In-person and digital resources
What stands out most about the Careers Service is how accessible and supportive the staff are. Whether you know what you want to do or not, there is always help available, either through in-person consultations or digital resources. The team genuinely cares about helping students succeed and are dedicated to offering tailored advice that makes a tangible difference to your career prospects.
The impact of the Careers Service on my journey
For me, the Careers Service has been a game-changer. They provided not only practical support but also the confidence I needed to pursue opportunities I might not have considered on my own. If you choose Dundee, you will have a dedicated team behind you, ready to help you take the next step towards your future career.
