My experience as a business economics with marketing student

Kate shares what it's like to be a business student at Dundee

Business Economics with Marketing is one of the most flexible courses in the School of Business. You can take marketing, management, economics, and some finance modules. This was the reason that I chose it because I wanted variety in my course. You can also take it with a language as a joint course, which is always a plus. As it covers such a wide variety of subjects, the course is great if you are still undecided on what subject you would like to study. But if you have good numerical skills and a passion for economics, you will fit right in.

Balancing theory and numerical work

When it comes to workload, I would say it varies with the modules you choose – of course, some modules are more numerical, while others are theory-focused. I would say that you can alter the level of difficulty with your optional modules and make it work around a part-time job, for example. The workload progresses with each year, but by third and fourth year you are more technical and specialised in the subjects.

Friendly lecturers and in-class assistance

The School of Business offers lots of support to students. The lecturers are all friendly and always help you out during class hours with any issues you might have – whether it’s solving a maths problem or software support. Even if you are taking modules outside of your main subject, there is always enough information and additional reading to support you.

Gaining real-world work experience

A key difference for this course is the opportunity to gain real-life work experience. In my second year, I did an internship at a local company. I worked thirty hours during term time and gained my first work experience through the curriculum. Having this as part of your course is an amazing opportunity, because it allows you to see earlier in your degree which pathway is better for you. Additionally, you can add this experience to your CV – a must have when applying for jobs after university. I personally secured another internship afterwards thanks to a great recommendation from my internship mentor.

Conducting research for external clients

Another practical element of my course is the Marketing Research project in fourth year. During this module we are conducting marketing research for external clients or the University itself. You will gain lots of useful data collection, communication, and collaboration skills. You will find and deliver meaningful solutions for your client, and university staff will support you every step of the way.

Feeling confident about the future

I have loved spending my undergraduate time at the University – the closeness of the campus, cosy and small city and great teaching have made these years unforgettable for me. Thanks to my course, I feel confident about my future.
