My mechanical engineering journey

Bradley shares why he decided to study mechanical engineering at Dundee

Deciding what to study at university can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re still figuring out what truly excites you. For me, mechanical engineering stood out because of my fascination with how things work and a love for problem-solving. If you’re curious about designing solutions to real-world challenges, it could be a great fit for you too.

Building and testing a wind turbine

What has really stood out to me throughout my time at Dundee is how practical the course is. It’s not just about theory and lectures – we’re encouraged to apply what we learn in labs and workshops, working on projects that closely mirror real-world engineering challenges. One of the most memorable projects I worked on involved designing a small-scale wind turbine. It wasn’t about coming up with a concept; we built it, tested it, and then refined it. That hands-on experience makes learning so much more engaging, and it’s one of the reasons the course feels both exciting and relevant.

Developing transferable skills

Dundee is doing a great job of preparing me for life after university. The course provides a solid foundation in core areas like thermodynamics, robotics, and fluid mechanics, but just as important are the skills we develop outside of technical work. Whether it’s through group projects or presentations, I’ve learned how to collaborate, communicate effectively, and think creatively about complex problems – skills that are crucial not just in engineering, but in any career path.

Industry connections and real-world experience

A major strength of studying at Dundee is the University’s strong connections with industry. We’ve had guest lectures from professionals working in the field, and there are many opportunities for placements and internships. Gaining that real-world experience has been invaluable and gives a real insight into what working as a mechanical engineer looks like. It’s not just about completing coursework; it’s about understanding how everything we learn applies beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on my time at Dundee

One thing that really surprised me when I started at Dundee was the level of support available. Before coming here, I was a little nervous about keeping up with the demands of the course, but there is always help when you need it. Lecturers are approachable, and there are plenty of resources, such as office hours and study groups, to help you when things get tough. There is a real sense of community here, which makes even the more challenging parts of the course feel manageable.

More than just a degree

Overall, studying Mechanical Engineering at Dundee has been an amazing journey. The combination of hands-on learning, industry connections, and a supportive environment makes it so much more than just a degree – it’s about building the skills and confidence needed for a successful career. If you are looking for a course that combines practical experience with academic rigour, Dundee is a fantastic place to start that journey.
