Staying active and healthy

Bradley shares how he stays active at Sport and Active Health at the University of Dundee

Taking care of your wellbeing is essential during university, and having access to the Sport and Active Health (SpAH) facilities at the University has been a huge benefit for me. With all the academic demands, it’s easy to get caught up in studying, but having the opportunity to step away and focus on physical health and fun has made a real difference. Whether you’re new to exercise or already experienced, Dundee’s facilities offer something for everyone.

Friendly community and staff support

The University gym is one of the main places I go to unwind and stay active. It’s well-equipped with everything from cardio machines to free weights. For those who enjoy strength training, the Strength Hub is a dedicated space for serious lifting. It offers a range of high-quality equipment that has helped me build strength and stay focused during stressful times. Working out here has been a fantastic way to manage my mental and physical health. I’ve met so many friendly people, and the staff are always willing to help.

Trying new classes: yoga, Pilates, and bike

You don’t need to be a fitness expert to make the most of Dundee’s facilities. One of the things I love is how accessible everything is, especially the range of classes available. If you’re just starting out, want to try something different, or want to meet new people, there are options like yoga, Pilates, and bike classes. I had never done group fitness before, but trying a yoga class with friends was a fun and motivating experience. The welcoming atmosphere and the chance to work out with others really helped me feel more comfortable trying something new.

Team sports and social activities

If you prefer team sports or just want to have fun with friends, the University’s sports halls are also available for booking. You can reserve a badminton or squash court for a quick game between study sessions. The booking app makes it easy to fit in sports around your schedule, and with a huge variety of sports available, there’s always something to try.

The pool and relaxation facilities

The pool is another fantastic facility, offering both a space for fitness and relaxation. I personally spend a lot of time here because I play for the water polo team. I’ve used the sauna when I didn’t feel up for the gym, and it’s also a great place to relax and clear your head. Swimming has been an effective way to stay active without putting too much strain on my body.

Balancing studies and physical activity

Having these facilities on campus has made it much easier to stay healthy and balance my studies with physical activity. The variety and accessibility mean that no matter what your experience level is, there’s always something that fits your needs. The combination of fitness and fun has helped me maintain a better balance in my daily life, reducing stress and improving my overall wellbeing. Dundee makes it easy to stay active, and that’s been one of the most valuable aspects of my time here.
