Getting started with IT at Dundee

Updated on 26 August 2024

Digital and Technology Services (DTS) have put this guide together to help get you set up and running with our main IT tools as quickly as possible

On this page

Your dundee.ac.uk account

Your dundee.ac.uk account gets you access to the systems and applications you need during your studies.

  • Your username is the same as your student ID number*.
  • Your email address will be in the format: [StudentID]@dundee.ac.uk.
  • Your password is the one you have used for My Applications, or to login to eVision to Matriculate

Before you arrive, we recommend setting up the following to keep your @dundee.ac.uk account secure:

Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Sometimes called two-step verification, multi-factor authentication (MFA) makes you confirm your login using a separate device to keep your account and data secure. You may have used this already with your bank, or other online services.

There are several options, including text messages, however we recommend the Microsoft Authenticator app for the easiest experience.

Set up multi-factor authentication on your account

Self service password reset

If you've forgotten your password you can reset it yourself, instantly, using your phone or an alternative email address so long as you set up your self-service details.

Access your email

Outlook on the web is the browser-based version of Outlook. It’s accessible from most browsers and gives you access to your email, calendar, and contacts.

Wifi and getting online

Our superfast wifi network, eduroam, is available throughout our campuses. You'll also find eduroam in different places across the globe and can use your @dundee.ac.uk login to get free wifi wherever you find it.

Connect to eduroam wifi

StudentResidences wifi

Brought your printer, games console, or Smart TV to University with you? StudentResidences is a superfast wifi network available in University accommodation only to let you use devices that cannot connect to eduroam.

SafeZone (security app)

SafeZone is a free app that is available to our staff and students. The app enables location-based communication, either from the University or from the user. It does so to alert when there is a specific incident or when someone needs help.

Install the SafeZone app on your mobile

AppsAnywhere

There are several ways to get access to the software required for your studies whether that is on campus or on your own computer.

Accessing Student Software

Student computers

We have over 2,000 computers in our libraries and IT suites across all three campuses.

Check to see if a computer is already signed in before you use it.

Once you are finished using a computer, remember to sign out. Do not stay logged into a device if you are finished using it.

MyDesktop

Our virtual desktop system provides you access to a University Windows desktop, just like a student PC in the Library. Use MyDesktop to access specialist software you need to carry out your work.

Connect to MyDesktop

Borrow a laptop

The LapSafe Lockers in the Main Library and Kirkcaldy Library allow you to borrow a university managed laptop for a short duration. For use only in the Main Library or Kirkcaldy Campus, these laptops allow more flexibility in where you choose to study. It also means that you can borrow and use a laptop if you are unable to use your own for any reason.

How to use LapSafe lockers

Printing

There are 30 pay as you go printers for students across our campuses. We are updating our printers during September 2024 and new instructions will be published then. Our legacy system, Pay2Print will be in operation until then.

Policies

The University has a range of policies related to IT. Some of these are about the University's responsibilities, but others are about your responsibilities as a user.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

With so many Artificial Intelligence tools available with many being integrated into core software like Microsoft, Google and Adobe, it's hard to not see it on a daily basis.

Whether you're new to some of these tools or may have some experience with them, it's important that you understand what the university's guidelines are for the use of AI.

Check out our guide on the use of generative artificial intelligence by students.
