Wellbeing and inclusive accommodation

We offer you a warm welcome and a safe space, with a residents' community that reflects our values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The University of Dundee is committed to the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

You'll find a welcoming and safe atmosphere where everyone feels included – whether that's in classes or in student accommodation. Our student residences team are also here to help.

We recognise that everyone is unique and we aim to ensure that when you live in University accommodation, your needs are met as far as possible.

Students with disabilities or a health condition

If you have any specific needs related to a disability or health condition, we can work together to find a solution.

For example, for some students we have provided:

  • orthopaedic or posturepedic mattresses for diagnosed skeletal conditions
  • private fridges for food allergies or storing medication
  • designated “quiet blocks” of flats for students with diagnosed conditions e.g. for students who are neurodiverse or whose mental wellbeing would otherwise benefit from a quieter flat
  • alternative means of alerting devices such as vibrating pillows or door alerters for deaf and hearing loss students
  • blackout blinds for students who are light-sensitive or have other sensory issues
  • ground floor flats for students with restricted mobility

We also have a small number of fully adapted flats within our residences for students who require them.

Your needs

To help us understand what you need, please

  • speak to us as soon as possible. Email Robert ([email protected]), our residences team Health & Disability Support Advisor. Robert is a “safe face, in a safe space” for you to discuss your needs and concerns one to one.
  • register with the University Disability Service who will, with your permission, liaise with us on how best to support you in your student accommodation. They can also advise you on other ways the University can help you.

Designated “quiet blocks”

We have identified two blocks of flats (Seabraes Flats 33-64 ) which are designated “quiet blocks” for students with a diagnosed condition, are neurodiverse, or whose mental wellbeing would benefit from sharing with flatmates and neighbours where the noise levels are lower.

Seabraes is beautifully located, beside a pedestrian/cycle path stretching between the Magdalen Yard greenspace and the city centre. Traffic noises are minimal with no main roads and yet a walk to campus takes less than five minutes.

If a space in a quieter block would suit you, select “Seabraes 33-64” in the location preference of your application and email Robert ([email protected]) or use the “Additional Notes” section in your Accommodation application form to tell us how this would benefit you.

Be Yourself!

The University of Dundee’s student and staff community is made up of a rich, diverse tapestry of people, and it’s one of the reasons the University of Dundee is such a special place to study and to choose our accommodation to make your new home away from home.

Flatmates

We know your flatmates are amongst the first and most important relationships you will form when you arrive and you will want to share with other students who you have things in common with and where you can just be yourself.

Diet

If you tell us about any particular diet you follow, such as vegetarian or halal, we will try to place you with some other flatmates who follow the same diet.*

Quiet Nights In/Nights Out

Whether you’re a social butterfly who loves socialising, going out and immersing yourself in what the university and the city has to offer, or your idea of a great night is watching a film with flatmates, let us know and we will try to match you up with others who enjoy what you enjoy.*

Gender sharing preferences

If you want to live with other students of the same gender or prefer a mixed flat, let us know.*

LGBTQ+ friendly flats

If you would like to live with flatmates who are LGBTQ+ friendly, let us know and we’ll try to match up your flat allocation together.*

Celebrate your culture together!

Part of striving to provide you with a home away from home is celebrating important dates and festive events that are important to you. Our Reslife team organise events and activities throughout the academic year where our university residents can immerse themselves in familiar or new experiences, enjoying their time together.

Applications for accommodation

* All applications for accommodation are carefully reviewed by our experienced residences team. We will do our best to give you what you have asked for, but this is subject to availability. Although we can’t guarantee to give you absolutely everything you have asked for, we can guarantee that we will do everything we can to provide you with the closest match available to suit your needs and stated preferences.
