Doctor appointments and mental health nurses

Information about the mental health support we offer.

Students on campus green

All students are strongly encouraged to register with a local GP for a full range of medical services.

Register for NHS care

You should register with a local GP practice (doctors’ surgery) as soon as possible after arriving in Dundee. If you do not register you may have difficulty accessing NHS care if you need it.

If you are already registered with a GP in the UK, but not close to where you will live as a student, you are advised to transfer your NHS care  to a new GP practice and re-register in person with a new GP practice.

Contact the local GP practice that you have chosen as soon as possible as there may be limited spaces available. It is likely that you will need three forms of identification for the registration process:

  • a passport or UK driving licence
  • student ID card
  • documentation with your Dundee address on it (for example, a utility bill, rental agreement, or Confirmation of Student Status Letter)

Mental Health Nurses

This is not an emergency response service

If you are having suicidal thoughts and have active plans to end your life it is important that you speak to someone now using NHS 24.

You can also speak with your doctor, a tutor, a friend, or a relative.

It is important that you get the right support from the right service to meet your current needs.

  • If you are experiencing distress arising from life events;
    for example, relationship break-up, bereavement, and study stresses. Please see the mental health support guide
  • If you are likely to need longer-term or intensive support;
    you should make an appointment to see your own doctor to discuss an alternative service.
  • If you are currently supported by a mental health professional, either NHS or private;
    please contact them for support.
