Advanced practice in healthcare represents attaining a higher level of practice. This is an alternative to focusing on a specific area of clinical practice.

Advanced practice is characterised by autonomous decision making. This means that advanced practitioners are capable of assessing, diagnosing and treating patients.

This course is suitable for registered nurses, health and social care professionals. It is suitable for those who are either working in or towards an advanced practice or advanced clinical nurse specialist role.

The course was developed in collaboration with expert clinical practitioners. It complies with Scottish Government requirements for advanced practitioners and advanced clinical nurse specialists.

While studying this course, you will be supported to develop the skills to practice autonomously.

You will learn how to assess, diagnose, and manage undiagnosed, undifferentiated, and complex clinical presentations.

You'll learn how to do this in an evidence based, safe, effective and person-centred way.

You'll study a range of modules based on the four pillars of practice as defined by the Scottish Government :

  • Clinical Practice
  • Facilitation of Learning
  • Leadership
  • Evidence, Research and Development

These modules will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed for roles such as:

  • Advanced practitioner
  • Advanced clinical nurse specialist

You will be employed as a student advanced practitioner or student advanced clinical nurse specialist. Your role should be in a relevant clinical environment.

This will enable you to access appropriate clinical support and supervision to gain the knowledge and skills needed. We will ask you to show this support when you apply for the course. This is by providing a signed supervisor and manager form.
