Engineering, Design and Manufacture (Graduate Apprenticeship) BEng (Hons)

Start date
September 2025
Duration
4 or 3 years
Location
Dundee City Campus
On our BEng (Hons) Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Graduate Apprenticeship course, we hope that our Graduate Apprentices will not only develop their own knowledge and understanding but also help grow their business as well.
They will do this by learning how to:
- Integrate engineering principles, materials and technology selection into structured design methodologies based on their application to real world challenges.
- Understand the engineering environment, including strategy development, leadership, and business operations management knowledge, to play a management role in engineering project planning and delivery.
- Work closely and collaboratively with other employees, stakeholders, and customers, in a contemporary engineering organisation.
- Project manage and think creatively, supported by a set of problem-solving and modelling tools appropriate to engineering business operations
University-based learning
Graduate Apprentices will spend one day per week on campus at the University.
This is a Monday in first year, Tuesday in second year, Wednesday in third year, and Thursday in fourth year.
There is a three week break at Christmas, a two week break at Easter, and at least a six week break in the Summer.
We focus on continuous assessment over end of year exams. This can include coursework, journals, presentations, group work, and class tests, to name a few.
Work-based learning
Work-based learning plays a pivotal role in the delivery of the Graduate Apprenticeship Programme, allowing the apprentice to complete an honours degree one day per week, and therefore the apprentice’s role must be relevant to the course they are undertaking.
This not only allows the apprentice to transfer the knowledge they are learning back into their role, but it also provides an opportunity to structure any coursework they are asked to complete around their business.
This helps the apprentice to quickly relate their academic learning to real world situations and increases their employer’s return on investment.
Eligibility
Our programme has been designed to ensure that it is accessible to as wide a range of applicants as possible.
This not only allows as many businesses as possible to take advantage of the opportunity, but also ensures our apprentices are studying alongside people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
Our Graduate Apprenticeships are suitable for:
- Both current and new employees, who are at least 16 years of age with no maximum age
- Studying on the programme must lead to a higher level of qualification in a new area of learning
- Great for those who are completing or have completed a Foundation or Modern Apprenticeship and would like to develop further
- Applicants must be both a resident and working in Scotland at the start of their programme (please visit SAAS website for funding requirements)
- They should also meet the University’s entry requirements (see our ‘Entry requirements’ section)
“Graduate Apprenticeships are the best way to study. It puts you in a position where you are ahead of the standard graduate with four years of industry experience by the time you finish with an equivalent degree.
”
Kyle Baptie, Engineering Graduate Apprentice
Learning outcomes
The variety of topics covered within our Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Graduate Apprenticeship course allows our Graduate Apprentices to understand how to design manufacturing systems and the practicalities around how these products are made, whilst also being business focused.
