Teaching

We place a strong emphasis on small group teaching by qualified lawyers.

At Level 2, teaching is done through lectures, tutorials, and independent and group study.

At Levels 3 and 4 you will work more independently and take part in seminar discussions.

Level 4 you will work on your dissertation which is independent, but supervised, on a topic of your choice.

Assessment

You will have a variety of types of assessment, including written coursework, oral assessments and examinations. Some core modules are assessed by multiple choice exam, which gives useful practice to those who may undertake the SQE after graduation.

Coursework are often short, skills-based exercises enhancing employability.

You will be able to develop ‘mooting’ skills to learn how to behave in court.

In most modules there are two assessments.

Core Modules

These modules are an essential part of your course.

Module code: LW21013 Credits: 20 Semester: Semester 1

This will familiarise you with the concept and study of law, and the Scottish, United Kingdom, European, and International legal systems.

You will develop the fundamental skills to read and understand legislation and learn how to locate legal resources and interpret their significance.

Core Modules

These modules are an essential part of your course.

Module code: LW31030 Credits: 30 Semester: Semester 1

The English Law of Equity and Trusts is formed of principles developed to enhance common law. This introduces an emphasis on fairness and justice. Trusts are legal arrangements where one manages assets for another's benefit.

This module covers how equity and trusts can help people, charities, and businesses manage property.

Core Modules

These modules are an essential part of your course.

Module code: LW40001 Credits: 30 Semester: Both Semester 1 and 2

You will research a legal topic or question of your own choosing and write a sustainable piece of work to add to the existing literature on the topic.

You will be supported by a supervisor whilst undertaking extensive independent research and writing up the dissertation in semester two.

Module code: CP40001 Credits: 30 Semester: Semester 1

Learn how legislation and regulation are used to implement policy decisions in the energy industries. This covers:

  • the gas and electricity industries
  • the role of renewable energy in making consumption less carbon-intensive

Learn how these interact with commercial contracts. Learn about the provision of infrastructure and 'critical' minerals.
