Can you imagine the mass of the Sun squished into a sphere with a 10 km radius? This is what happens in a neutron star. What about quasars, pulsars, black holes, red giants, supernovae etc.? The Universe is replete with exotic objects for which our day-to-day experiences on earth provide little intuition.

Astrophysics provides a framework to study the Universe. Astrophysicists have to develop hardware (e.g. telescopes) to enable measurement of the Universe. They also use the laws of physics to develop the theories that can explain their observations. Ultimately, these theories are formulated using mathematics.

The Mathematics and Astrophysics BSc (Hons) degree provides fundamental tools needed to study modern astrophysics. You'll study both pure and applied mathematics alongside core building blocks of astrophysics such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, relativity, space physics and astronomy.

Increased employability

This course equips you with skills that many employers highly value. You will learn to:

  • become a logical numerate problem solver
  • build mathematical models of physical systems
  • use software used by mathematicians and physicists in academic and industry

By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers in science, technology, and other fields.

Passionate teaching

On the Mathematics and Astrophysics BSc (Hons), you’ll learn from expert lecturers who are passionate about their subjects. They’ll provide a mix of academic knowledge and practical skills, teaching in a way that is both challenging and supportive. Their goal is to inspire you while helping you succeed in your studies.

Student community

As a student on the Mathematics and Astrophysics BSc (Hons), you’ll be part of a friendly and welcoming community.

The Physics and Maths societies run exciting events throughout the year. These include:

  • peer-support groups to help you with challenging aspects of the course
  • international trips to world-famous scientific locations, such as CERN and the European Space Agency

These activities offer a great chance to connect with other students, share experiences, and make the most of your time at university.
